We are committed to providing affordable counselling. It is important for you to be comfortable working with your counsellor. Talk to us if you are unsure if counselling is for you or if you haven't been to counselling before. If at the end of your first session you decide to continue looking for a counsellor that better suits you, you will not be charged for that session. |

|
What happens in a counselling session?
You will be asked to describe your experience of the problem you are facing and of the effect it is having on your life. There might be stories you haven't been able to tell anywhere else or regrets you need to come to terms with. We will talk about what you would like to achieve and of the changes you are working towards. We work with the skills and strengths you already have, and together we will find options and solutions to the difficulties you are facing. You will be resourced and will learn some new skills and strategies.
We are committed to working within the Code of Ethics of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors. Any information you discuss with your counsellor is confidential under the guidelines set out under this code. Your counsellor will discuss this more fully before you begin work together. Click here for more information on the Code of Ethics.

Location
Sessions are usually hosted at the consulting rooms at 470 Glenfield Road. This location is discreet with plenty of parking. We understand that for clients struggling with a chronic or terminal illness, transportation can be difficult. The site of therapeutic meetings can therefore be negotiated with your counsellor. There is no extra charge for home visits.
Cancellation Policy
When an appointment is made, that time is set aside specially for you. Appointments cancelled more than 24hours prior will be rebooked at no cost. For sessions where there was no notification of cancellation or less than 24hours notification, we do ask for 50% of the fee. |

Our approach to counselling
Our approach to counselling focuses on the stories of your life and involves finding ways in which you can respond to whatever problem or difficulty you are facing. We are mindful of how societal ideas about family, gender, age, class and cultural background can significantly influence your experience of life. The unique skills and knowledge developed by you in the course of living your own life, in your own context and in your own way are of great importance to us and are explored and integrated into the work. We are committed to encouraging, supporting and empowering you in working towards the health, wellbeing and relationships you would prefer to have and the life you would prefer to live.

A message from Shireen
Hello!
I am so proud of the service we offer. This work is exciting and enriching and the best feeling in the world is seeing clients emerge on the other side. I migrated to New Zealand in 2002 with my husband and have two children. My experiences have given me some understanding of what it means to leave established support systems behind and start anew and to juggle different committments - family, work and study to name a few! I have always been interested in the way in which people's lives and relationships unfold. My particular interest in health and wellbeing counselling is longstanding and my experience in this field begins as a home support worker. As a counsellor I am committed to working alongside you to help you live the life you would prefer to live.
